Intro to counselling approaches in residential aged care
About
Psychological treatments are becoming more available in residential aged care homes across Australia. However, psychologists, social workers and counsellors rarely receive training to provide such interventions to older adults living in residential care homes. The Swinburne Wellbeing Clinic for Older Adults has provided counseling services within such settings for 14 years. The clinic has also offered clinical placements to postgraduate students in psychology, social work and counselling. This panel brings together graduates of the placement to discuss their experiences and learnings in delivering psychological interventions to aged care residents. The panel will discuss effective counselling approaches for improving the late life mental health of residents, provide an overview of a holistic model of care that involves families and staff, and showcase the creative use of reminiscence, arts, technology and innovative methods to facilitate therapeutic goals.Location
