Guitar/ Backing Traditional Irish Music Workshop - Starts 10am (please arrive 9:45am) Gaelic Club - Tutor: Rohan Merrill
This will be suitable for guitarists who use DADGAD and/or Standard tuning.
Rohan Merrill is a guitarist and singer/songwriter who harbours an enthusiastic obsession for celtic music and culture. He performs and hosts at Irish music sessions throughout Sydney.
Concertina/Box Workshop - Starts 11:30am (please arrive 11:15am) Gaelic Club - Tutor:Tadgh O'Sullivan
Tadgh is a concertina player from Millstreet in North Cork. He is a member of the All Ireland-winning Shandrum Ceili Band and has appeared on the band's two albums. He has taught across Ireland at many workshops and for various Comhaltas Branches.
Fiddle Workshop (Sligo Style) - Starts 1pm (please arrive 12:45pm) Gaelic Club - Tutor: Síofra McHugh
Síofra comes from a very musical family and has been immersed in music especially traditional Irish music since a very young age. She holds numerous all Ireland Fleadh Cheoil medals, was awarded the Michael Coleman junior Fiddle player of the year award. Síofra holds her comhaltas TTCT diploma, has performed as part of the Comhaltas tour of Ireland 2009 and British tour 2010. Siofra has toured internationally with many Irish Dance shows playing both fiddle and piano. She has also been featured many times on the Fleadh programme on RTE, Fleadh live, TG4 Geantraí, comhaltas live and recorded for national traditional music archive in Dublin.
Teens/Advanced Kids Workshop - Starts 2:30pm (please arrive 2:15pm) Gaelic Club - Tutor: Jade Tinkler
Jade Tinkler began her musical life as a flautist within the “Western Art Music” tradition. She holds a Masters degree in orchestral conducting and has performed as both a conductor and as a flautist from Hobart to Brisbane and in London. Jade is an accomplished conductor with an interest in the maintenance and promotion of living traditions. Jade was the youngest Australasian competitor selected to work with the Sydney Symphony and Lorin Maazel in the Australasian round of the prestigious Maazel-Villar competition. In recent years Jade has been drawn to exploring the heritage, conventions and possibilities of the traditional Irish wooden flute.
Jade has written a number of “trad” reels, jigs and airs drawing on the Irish musical tradition, many of which have been performed by her trio Witches Leap. Jade’s compositions are imbued with a lyrical freshness and originality while still drawing deeply from the rich well of Irish music, with an authenticity that upholds the trad style.
