Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest is a witty farce about mistaken identities, secret engagements and romantic entanglements. The play centres on Jack Worthing, a country squire who invents a philandering brother Earnest as an excuse to escape to London. There, he uses the name "Ernest" to woo Gwendolen Fairfax, the cousin of his friend Algernon. Meanwhile, Algernon also poses as Earnest to win the heart of Jack's ward, Cecily.
