About

Bookings have now closed - but you can still be part of the fun and walk the bridge!

Please see the below information if you are interested in being part of the celebrations on Sunday 1 June.

The new Bridgewater Bridge opens to traffic at the start of June and members of the local community have a chance to take part in a very special celebration of this milestone.

The Department of State Growth is hosting a local Community Event and bridge walks on Sunday, 1 June, where members of the community can register to cross the new bridge on foot ahead of opening to traffic, as well as register to attend a special community event at the Project's Precast yard in Bridgewater, where there will be entertainment, children's activities, information stalls and food and beverage offerings.

High demand and limited parking
We have been overwhelmed by the number of people interested in attending the event. While tickets have been issued to help optimise the use of limited car parks, we cannot guarantee parking availability. It is likely that there will be delays and we ask for your patience and understanding while we do our best to accommodate everyone.

While registering your interest was encouraged, we won’t turn people away on the day, but please be mindful of the significant numbers expected and prepare for delays.

Shuttle Bus locations
First shuttles buses depart at approx. 10:15, and last depart at approx. 3:20pm

Shuttle buses will be operating on a continual loop between the parking locations and the bridge. The shuttles will depart and drop off from the below location for each site:

Precast Yard: Cove Hill Road. Buses will be at the rear of the shed (follow the signs). You will need to walk through the shed to access the buses

Civic Centre and Southern Central Trade Centre overflow parking on Green Point Road: Buses will depart from Eddington St (on the bus stop outside the Jordan River Learning Centre entrance) which is between the two over flow car park locations.
Please note, we have also secured additional overflow parking in the Jordan River Learning Federation Senior School on Eddington St. This carpark will be open from 10am and will close at 5pm. All cars need to be out by 5pm, as the car park will be locked at this time.

MyState Bank Arena:
Buses will be picking up from the bus stop below Entry Door 1.

*At the conclusion of your bridge walk, please ensure you get on the bus that will take you back to your parking location, either MyState Bank Arena or Bridgewater. There will be bus marshals at all locations to assist you.

Arrive on time, not early
Please be mindful that there is significant interest in the event, and we will try and move as many people through the sites as possible throughout the day.
Please note, the Precast Yard in Cove Hill Road will not open until 10am. To ensure we can open on time, please do not arrive before 10am and do not queue in Cove Hill Road.

Carpool or get dropped off
We strongly encourage attendees to carpool or arrange drop-offs where possible.

Pedestrian access to the bridge
Live locally and just want to walk across the bridge? We’ll provide safe pedestrian access onto the bridge from either end. Traffic controllers will be stationed at major crossing points to ensure people can reach the bridge safely. Please see the maps of the pedestrian access points at the bottom of this page.

Bridge walk
The walk across the bridge is approximately 1km in length. There is unfortunately no option to be picked up by the bus part way into the walk. You can stay on the bus and cross the bridge that way, but those choosing to walk will need to walk the full 1km to board the buses back to their parking location

No bikes, scooters or skateboards
To keep everyone safe, bikes, scooters and skateboards are not permitted on the bridge during the event. From Monday, 2 June you will be able to access the 3-metre-wide shared path to walk, ride, scoot or skate safely across the bridge.

No large bags
Please note that we are unable to have large bags on the buses. Please leave anything but the essentials at home! Prams and nappy bags are acceptable.

Dress warm
It’s winter in Hobart! The weather can be unpredictable, so dress warmly and comfortable for outdoor conditions. Please also wear flat, enclosed and sturdy shoes and be aware of some uneven surfaces across the sites.

Facilities
While the Precast yard will be home to the community celebration, with food, music and children’s activities, we will also have barbecues operating at the MyState Bank Arena Park and Ride and the Brighton Civic Centre Park and Ride. Toilets will also be available at these sites, as well as on the bridge.

Uneven Surfaces
The Precast Yard has been a worksite, please be aware that some areas within the site have uneven ground and minor hazards. We know this may be a concern for some attendees, and we want to make sure you feel safe and supported. If uneven surfaces might present a challenge for you, we recommend the overflow parking at MyState Bank Arena as a more accessible alternative, with flat surfaces and easier access throughout

Please do take care as you move around and don’t hesitate to ask one of our friendly wardens if you need a hand — they’re there to help.
