SUSO Presents: Sun on the Water

About
Immerse yourself in an evening of breath-taking music with Luke Spicer and the Sydney University Symphony Orchestra at Marrickville Town Hall on Saturday 7 June 2025 at 7pm. Titled Sun on the Water, this concert is a celebration of nature, emotion, and storytelling — a Pastoral Journey through sound.
Opening the night is the premiere of Carmen, by Sydney-based composer Abhinav Ananth. Drawing inspiration from the love poetry of Catullus, this powerful new work delves into the emotional turbulence of romance — seeking to understand the least understandable mechanism of the soul.
Performed by the brilliant Sunny Roh, Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is a storm of passion and precision. From its chilly Nordic opening to its fiery, virtuosic finale, the work wonderfully captures the stark beauty of the Finnish landscape — and serves as a breath-taking showcase for one of Australia’s finest violinists.
To close the evening, wander through the countryside with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, 'Pastoral.' A work of deep serenity and joy, it’s not just a depiction of nature — it’s a profound reflection on our connection to the earth. With flowing brooks, sun-dappled fields, and a thunderstorm that gives way to radiant calm, Beethoven’s Pastoral perfectly captures the concert’s central theme: the harmony between sunlight, water, and the human spirit.
Whether you’re a classical music lover or new to the concert hall, Sun on the Water promises to stir the soul and awaken the senses
