Renowned jazz guitarist Doug de Vries and recorder player Rodney Waterman celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of their album, "Água e Vinho" with a concert at Mark St Hall performing a mix of Brazilian repertoire and original music.

ECM recording artist and Carmo Records founder Egberto Gismonti was astonished, but also very pleased, to receive, in 1998, an album by the unorthodox Melbourne-based duo of Rodney Waterman and Doug de Vries: “I’m still surprised by the instrumentation,” Gismonti confessed. “I didn’t expect to hear this much music from recorder and guitar!”

It was Gismonti’s playing and composing which, back in 1995, provided the impetus for the musicians’ collaborative work: “Doug played me Gismonti’s album ‘Alma’,” Waterman recalls. “I was completely blown away by the music and especially Gismonti’s amazing ability as a performer. Our duo began as a result of this meeting.”

Out of that initial meeting came Agua e Vinho (Water and Wine) a recording of Brazilian and other pieces on recorder and guitar. The extraordinary virtuosity of each musician is mind-blowing. The beauty of the music they produce together is totally enchanting, and the opportunity to hear it again, played live, very tantalising.

Rodney Waterman graduated from Melbourne University with a degree in musicology and went on to study recorder with Dutch early music specialist and contemporary composer Kees Boeke in Italy and Holland. Waterman’s repertoire is eclectic and includes baroque, folk, contemporary and Brazilian music, with a special emphasis on Brazilian music. He also plays lute.

He is particularly interested in exploring, the intrinsic and fundamental beauty of the essentially simple ‘woody’ tonal qualities of the recorder, aiming to discover more of the ‘soul’ and ‘spirit’ of the instrument.

Doug de Vries is an Australian jazz guitarist who has spent several decades working across many genres and is a dedicated composer for both 6 & 7-string guitar, excelling in choro, samba, Bossa nova, jazz and roots music. He exhibits a strong affinity with Brazilian guitar repertoire and has recorded a number of collections of original works and classic Brazilian repertoire, ‘DdV Solo’ among others.
