Open Studio: Maloya Music, Singing and Dance

About
Join Dr Muriel Hillion Toulcanon for an open studio session exploring the powerful rhythms and melodies of Maloya, the traditional music of Réunion Island, born out of slavery in the 17th century in the Indian Ocean.Between 10:30am and 11:30am, the session will focus on music and singing, with live percussion and call-and-response songs. No experience is needed, just bring your voice, your curiosity, and a willingness to connect.
The next hour will offer a relaxed artist Q&A alongside a light Creole refreshment: a chance to ask questions, share reflections, and connect with the spirit of Maloya.
The final part of the session will be dedicated to Maloya dance. Rooted in resistance and communal expression, Maloya dance brings people together through grounded rhythms, fluid gestures, and storytelling in motion. Participants will be gently guided through simple choreographic sequences accompanied by live music and singing.
