Loss Throughout the Lifespan: How Personality and Phase of Life Impact Grief

Grief is a universal experience, yet how we process loss is deeply influenced by who we are and where we are in life. This dynamic and research-informed webinar explores the complex interplay between personality, developmental stage, and the grieving process. Dr Paul Martin will examine how the experience of loss unfolds differently across childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and late life. Participants will learn how cognitive, emotional, and social maturity at each life stage shapes how individuals understand and respond to bereavement. In addition, the webinar will delve into the role of personality traits, particularly the Big Five dimensions (Neuroticism, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Openness), in predicting grief reactions and recovery trajectories. For instance, how might high neuroticism complicate grieving? How can conscientiousness support adaptive coping? Dr. Martin will explore emerging research on these questions, providing participants with a nuanced understanding of how dispositional factors affect mourning behaviors, emotional resilience, and vulnerability to prolonged or complicated grief.
