Understanding disorders of movement and their impact on activity and participation
Distance-based Online Module
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This 30-hour online learning module will explore common movement disorders in childhood disability, with a greater focus on Cerebral Palsy.
The course runs from 14th October 2024 to 10th December 2024, and costs $880 inc GST, plus booking fees.
This course forms one of the modules for the certificated Bobath Foundation Course for Paediatric Clinical Practice and builds upon the skills of observation and analysis developed in the Typical Child Development module.
This course utilises concepts around movement analysis and the understanding of Dynamic Systems to develop more in-depth analysis of the features associated with atypical development. It aids the understanding of the body structure and function impairments and their impact on activity and participation.
There is a greater focus on knowledge and understanding the movement disorders associated with Cerebral Palsy. The movement patterns and motor control deficits are examined to develop options for interventions that are specific to the main limiting factors for each child. The current systems used to classify the movement disorders of CP and the evidence to support their use will be examined. Examples of the different classifications are presented in both video and written materials.
Aims:
By the end of this module participants will be able to:
-
- Explain the different classification systems used in cerebral palsy (CP) and their relevance to intervention.
- Understand the current evidence to support the various classification systems.
- Identify the features of atypical development and explain how these impact on body structure and function, activity and participation (based on ICF).
- Undertake in-depth clinical reasoning of the motor patterns, motor coordination and co-morbidities e.g. sensory, perceptual, oral motor, associated with developmental neurological disorders, primarily cerebral palsy (CP).
- Have greater insights into the transdisciplinary/multidisciplinary approach to management of paediatric neurological movement disorders.
- Apply in-depth clinical reasoning skills to enable appropriate selection of treatment tools to optimize activity and participation specific to the individual child with neurological movement disorder, focused on a person centred/family centred approach.
- Gain insights and strategies for integrating intervention into everyday life
How it works:
- The course material is accessed through an online learning platform, Moodle
- Course content can be accessed at your own pace during the course duration, however there are set timepoints for completion of topics to coincide with the tutorial discussions
- Teaching materials include PowerPoint lecture in PDF format; confidential video clips of children; relevant readings and additional resources
- There are 4 online Zoom sessions where case studies are used to facilitate application of knowledge to practice. These are compulsory to attend and often occur in the evening/after work
- The course content is presented in sections. Participants will need to read and assimilate the material (i.e. review the interactive power point lectures, videos, any research articles and supplementary readings as the course progresses).
- Participants are encouraged to write information in a reflective logbook as you view the online module
The course has been developed to allow participants to study in a manner that best suits them and their practice context. The time commitment will vary for each participant dependent on their previous knowledge and experience, however as a rule of thumb, each participant can expect to spend a minimum of 30 hours of study to complete the online module.
Completion of all components of this module, is necessary to being issued with the module completion certificate and to progress along the Bobath Foundation Course Paediatric Clinical Practice Pathway. Alternatively, it can also be completed as a standalone module.
** In addition it is important to highlight that there are strictly no refunds provided if you are unable to participate in the course after registering.
