Demise
Directed by Nicky Fernandes
Step into the unsettling yet captivating world of “Demise,” a riveting collection of four short plays by Natasha Daly that masterfully blend dark humour with the exploration of trauma and tragic endings. Each story, set against different decades—from the vibrant 1940s to the anxious present—unfolds raw narratives brimming with emotional tension and unexpected wit.
“Sweet Comic Valentine,” set in a 1940s speakeasy bar, a charming hitman grapples with his conscience as he falls for an innocent woman, highlighting the absurdity of love in a life steeped in darkness, where laughter and horror coexist.
“Reasons Why You Should Eat Me,” set in 1950s atop a snowy mountain, presents a desperate survival scenario that combines morbid humor with the grim realities faced by two plane crash survivors, showcasing how humor can emerge even in dire circumstances.
“Cancel My Appointments,” set in a 1970s pyschedelic doctor’s office, dives into a man’s existential crisis, where he navigates his unhappiness with a comedic lens, revealing the absurdities of life’s pressures and expectations.
Finally, “Fishing,” set in a contemporary apartment, serves a chilling twist, interspersed with sharp, dark humor that uncovers the sinister sides of seemingly innocuous interactions.
Daly’s writing invites the audience to confront the complexities of human nature, where humour often becomes a coping mechanism against the backdrop of despair.
