Patrick Nunn will guide you through the stories of climate upheaval in First Nations oral history. Recent research shows that in long-lived cultures, memories of major events can be passed down orally for thousands of years. Australian First Nations’ stories about rising sea levels and coastal submergence are key examples. This talk explores when and why these events happened, their effects on coastal peoples, and how we can date such ancient stories. Drawing on cases from Australia and northwest Europe, it highlights parallels between past and present, showing that people have long faced climate-driven sea-level rise.
