​Join us for one or both online programs hosted by the Immigration Museum, free for all HEN members:

​From Vietnam to Victoria: 

This 45 minute event will commence at 11.30am. It's designed for ages 10y-12y, but kids of all ages are welcome.

Mai Ho arrived in Victoria in the 1970s after leaving Vietnam as a result of the war. In this interactive virtual program, we will learn about her story through primary sources.

Kids will experience:

  • A retelling of Mai Ho’s story using objects from the museum's collection
  • Exploring a series of paintings by Thomas Le that represent Mai’s journey from Vietnam to a refugee camp and eventual relocation to Victoria
  • Interacting with a museum educator by answering questions and sharing contributions.

Kids will learn:

  • Reasons why Mai Ho left and her journey escaping from Vietnam
  • About her time in a Malaysian refugee camp and her experiences of settling into Australia
  • About Mai’s contributions to Australian society since her arrival

A worksheet will be provided, to be printed ahead of the session, & kids will need pens or pencils.

This online session is supported with a pre-session activity program and follow up tasks.

Seeking Refuge

This 45 minute event will commence at 1pm. It's designed for ages 14y-16y, but kids of all ages are welcome.

In this online program, we learn about personal stories of refugees and asylum seekers through the museum’s collections, Australia’s immigration policies and UN Declaration of Human Rights.  

Kids will experience:

  • Stories of displaced peoples, asylum seekers and refugees from the museum’s collections
  • Presentation of key ideas, terminology and the process of seeking refuge in the Australian context

Kids will learn:

  • Key ideas and definitions including refugee, asylum seeker, internally displaced person, human rights
  • About key institutions and legislation including UN, UNHCR, Refugee Convention, Universal Declaration of Human Rights
  • An outline of the process for an individual who is seeking refuge
  • About a range of people across time and locations who have sought asylum to Australia

Families will need pens or pencils and paper to make notes on.

This program is delivered as an interactive virtual session on Microsoft Teams.
