Twined Basketweaving

About
A contemporary approach to the ancient craft of basketweaving. This course begins with the ‘twining’ technique—a traditional method adaptable to sturdy baskets, soft bags, wall hangings or sculptural forms. Creative expression is encouraged as students develop this foundational skill into their own designs. Experiment with plant fibres, recycled materials, raffia or hemp string, learning to ‘twine’ a tight weave or lace effect, and how to introduce stripes or checks. We’ll start with a small project before moving into individual designs.Weeks 1–2: Make a small basket while learning ‘twining’ and material variations.
Weeks 3–5: Design your own piece. Select and prepare materials.
Learning includes: basketry methods, history, plant fibre collection/preparation/storage.
Bring: garden scissors, peg, old towel. Optional: vines or plant fibres (not needed first session).
Provided: twining and framework materials, darning needles, spare scissors/towels, two A4 handouts.
