4A Talks: Man&Wah, Winnie Cheung, King Fong in Conversation

About
As part of the dual exhibition of Man&Wah: Propagate | Germinate | Bloom and Winnie Cheung: Last Call, 4A is proud to host this ‘In Conversation’ talk with the artists and the ‘King of Chinatown’ Mr King Fong OAM, moderated by Mr Eddie Ma of Soul of Chinatown. This esteemed panel of speakers will share their experiences living, working and making art beyond their respective ancestral homelands. What does it mean to be diaspora? How does it affect the production of creative work? How does one pay respect and acknowledge the importance of this new homeland and country?
Join us at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art for an enlightening afternoon, in conversations.
This session will be conducted and recorded in English. Auslan will not be available. Recorded conversation will be made available online with transcription at a later date.
Meet the Speakers:
Man&Wah:
Man&Wah are brothers and an artistic duo based in Meanjin/Brisbane, Australia. Over the past decade, their unique style of botanical and cosmic-inspired work has been exhibited and experienced in galleries, museums, state libraries, universities, opening events, music and entertainment festivals, conferences and public installations. They work across multiple mediums, including photography, video, audio, illustration, lighting, technology and live events. Man&Wah’s work is an invitation for people to slow down and reflect on the connections between nature, humans and the cosmos.
Winnie Cheung:
Winnie Cheung is a Hong Kong-born, New York-based storyteller + artist wandering around the intersections of art, design, TV and film, exploring a third culture, a feminine body that’s at times celebratory, sometimes emotional, occasionally feisty, quite often delusional.
Mr King Fong OAM:
King Fong (方勁武) is a highly respected member of Chinese community in Sydney. His nickname is ‘King of Chinatown’. Born in Suva of Fiji in 1938, King migrated to Sydney with his family in 1946 on a 'merchant status' visa. His father founded the family grocery store/lodging house 'Say Tin Fong & Co.' on 56-58 Dixon Street, Haymarket in 1949 and King succeeded the company after his father passed away and went on to be the general manager until his retirement in 1986. King has been involved in charity works with the Sydney Chinese community since 1960 and he is keen to preserve the history of Sydney's Chinatown. He played a crucial role in the re-development of Dixon Street Chinatown in the late 1970s and he still acts as the guide for Sydney Chinatown walking tour.
Meet the Moderator:
Eddie Ma:
Eddie Ma is a Sydney Architect with over a decade's experience in housing, architecture, and urban design. As a second-generation Chinese Australian, he's deeply connected to Sydney's Chinatown, committed to preserving its unique culture and breathing new life into the precinct.
