Framing power: curating photography through a feminist lens
About
This program explores the vital role women curators have played in shaping photographic canons, challenging dominant narratives, and amplifying underrepresented voices. Through feminist curatorial strategies, the rediscovery and recontextualisation of women photographers, and sustained efforts toward institutional change and advocacy, women curators continue to transform the field. The conversation will also delve into the politics of the archive and the ways women are reimagining it—not as a static repository, but as a dynamic, living space for community-led storytelling and the activation of alternative histories.Angela Connor (MAPh Senior curator) with Clare Needham (Bendigo Art Gallery), Serena Bentley (National Portrait Gallery), Bethan Johnson (ACMI), Chelsea Hopper (Independent Curator)
