Prof Jennifer Freyd on Betrayal Trauma & Betrayal Blindness

In this webinar, Prof Jennifer Freyd will explore the theory and research surrounding interpersonal betrayal trauma, institutional betrayal, betrayal blindness, and related concepts. Betrayal trauma occurs when individuals or institutions that a person relies on for safety and support violate that person’s trust or well-being—for example, physical, emotional, or sexual abuse in childhood perpetrated by a caregiver.
Institutional betrayal refers to the failure of institutions to protect or support individuals who depend on them, often compounding the original harm. Research shows that both betrayal trauma and institutional betrayal are widespread and linked to betrayal blindness—a coping mechanism that involves unawareness or forgetting of the betrayal—as well as a range of negative mental and physical health outcomes.
We will also examine research on DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender), a common defensive tactic used by perpetrators when confronted, and discuss emerging findings on institutional courage—proactive steps institutions can take to acknowledge harm and promote accountability.
