Not parroting! The role of imitation in language learning

Not parroting! The role of imitation in language learning

About

Imitation is an important part of learning a new language. But of course, we don’t want students ‘just parroting’ new language: repeating words and sentences that hold no meaning for them.

In this session we’ll explore how we can use imitation practices to support students to use new language in meaningful ways. We’ll look briefly at some theories that can guide our thinking, and then discuss practical strategies for embedding imitation into our explicit teaching of both speaking and writing.
