Ocean Saxophone Quartet - 14th World Saxophone Congress
About
Before heading to Harbin, China for the 14th World Saxophone Congress, the Ocean Saxophone Quartet returns to St John's Malvern East for a special Melbourne performance. This program celebrates Ocean’s mission: capturing Asian-Australian culture through music.
Featured is the return of Conversations at a Yum Cha Restaurant by Jordon He, a work that resonated deeply with audiences for its honest portrayal of Asian identity in Australia. Ocean will also premiere a brand-new commission, Heart Sound by Xiaole Zhan—an evocative piece that explores themes of heritage, memory, and belonging.
The program expands its cultural lens with the first movement of Dvořák’s American String Quartet, a work that channels immigrant experiences within the Western classical canon. Rounding out the evening are two Japanese favourites for saxophone quartet: Yoshimatsu’s Atom Hearts Club and Comets by Nagao.
