Webinar: Students with Emotional & Behavioural Difficulties

hero

Webinar Details

Approximately one in five Australian school students will have an emotional or behavioural difficulty (EBD). This is a concern that affects every classroom across the country. When we fail to adequately recognise and respond to these students, there are at least three alarming outcomes we can expect: that these students underperform academically; that their teachers become increasingly stressed by the challenges of teaching them; and that the school system can inadvertently contribute to a deterioration in student wellbeing. Thankfully, there are steps all members of the school community can take to make life-changing differences for students with EBDs.

In this presentation Dr Burns will provide an overview of practical and evidence-based strategies that every teacher can take – from classroom teachers on the front-line to school leaders and executives - to improve not only the academic performance of these students, but also their wellbeing in the longer term.

About Dr John Burns

Dr John Burns is a clinical psychologist and social worker who has spent 25 years working ‘at the coalface’ in schools. His professional passion is to see all school staff equipped to make a difference in the lives of young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties.  He balances clinical work with an ongoing academic role with the Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre at Macquarie University. His research is regularly published in international peer-reviewed journals. He has held numerous honorary roles, including Convenor of the Australian Psychological Society’s Psychologists in Schools Interest Group, and Convenor of the Association of Independent Schools New South Wales school counsellor network. He is the author of The No Nonsense Guide to Mental Health in Schools: What Every Teacher Can Do to Make a Difference.  In his spare time, John is a mediocre guitar player and devoted fan of the Wests Tigers Rugby League team.
