Approximately one in five Australian school students will have an emotional or behavioural difficulty (EBD). This is a concern that affects every classroom across the country. When we fail to adequately recognise and respond to these students, there are at least three alarming outcomes we can expect: that these students underperform academically; that their teachers become increasingly stressed by the challenges of teaching them; and that the school system can inadvertently contribute to a deterioration in student wellbeing. Thankfully, there are steps all members of the school community can take to make life-changing differences for students with EBDs.
In this presentation Dr Burns will provide an overview of practical and evidence-based strategies that every teacher can take – from classroom teachers on the front-line to school leaders and executives - to improve not only the academic performance of these students, but also their wellbeing in the longer term.
