Inclusive Care for LGBTI+ Older Adults

For this masterclass we have invited Twenty10 to run their Silver Rainbow LGBTI+ Ageing and Aged Care workshop. This masterclass will provide fundamental insights and understanding of the poorer health outcomes of older LGBTI+ people. Participants will be learn practical steps using a trauma-informed approach to support LGBTI+ older peoples’ care needs and navigation of their aged care services and care environments.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Gain an understanding of the social and psychological contributing factors of the health outcomes for older LGBTI+ people
- Identify practical steps on a personal and systemic level that workers can take to improve the LGBTI+ older person’s sense of safety and belonging
- Identify reasons why trauma-informed practice is especially essential when supporting LGBTI+ older people
FACILITATOR
Karen Menzies (she/her) is a Learning and Development Officer at Twenty10 with a substantial history and experience in a variety of educational topics, training-delivery formats and LGBTIQA+ Peer Work.
Her lived experience motivates her to educate others about the traumatic experiences of social and systemic marginalising, discrimination and abuse, along with the consequent adverse mental health impacts experienced by gender and sexually diverse individuals.
With a sensitive, personal interest in Trans Ageing / Aged-Care awareness, Karen is keen to facilitate educated, collaborative supports for older LGBTI+ people.
