The Importance of Being Earnest
About
Jack Worthing, a wealthy young man, leads a double life in order to escape his dull country life. He pretends to have an irresponsible brother named Ernest, allowing him to indulge in the vibrant social scene of London. In London, under the name Ernest, Jack courts Gwendolen Fairfax, the cousin of his friend Algernon Moncrieff. Algernon, in turn, creates his own imaginary invalid friend, "Bunbury," to escape his own obligations and seeks to court Jack's ward, Cecily Cardew, under the guise of being Ernest. The play explores the absurdities of Victorian society, the importance of names and identities, and the pursuit of marriage, all while revealing the characters' duplicity and ultimately finding reconciliation.
