(CPD Guide: 1 PS) The Northern Early Career Lawyer (NECL) committee welcomes Julia Higgins, Partner, Bishops to deliver a practical session on file management for early career lawyers and how to not burn out early, and some associated wellbeing guidance.

This session will consider the following and more:

1. Managing your caseload and wellbeing: Tips on how to balance competing demands, stay organised, and maintain wellbeing while handling a growing number of matters.

  • Prioritisation and time management basics
  • Recognising signs of overload
  • Setting realistic boundaries

2. Growing your caseload: Guidance on when and how to take on more work as your skills grow.

  • Knowing your limits
  • The difference between organic growth and strategic expansion
  • Talking with supervisors about capacity

3. Senior Practitioners List – what, when, and why: An introduction to the Senior Practitioners List, its purpose, and how and when to use it.

  • Who is on the list
  • How should it be used
  • How to seek informal guidance
Presenter 
Ms Julia Higgins is a Partner at Bishops Solicitors in Launceston. Julia graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Commerce and Laws in 2001 and was admitted to practice in 2002. Julia practices in Family Law and Child Protection. Julia is regularly appointed by the Court as an Independent Children’s Lawyer in complex parenting cases. Julia is the past President of the Law Society of Tasmania Council. Julia is the current Chair of the Family Law Practitioners Association Tas Inc and is a former Commissioner for the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania. Julia is a prior President of the Northern Young Lawyers Committee. Julia was recently appointed by Legal Aid Tasmania onto the Register of Legal Practitioners Tasmania – Family Violence: Cross examination of Parties Scheme.
CPD Points: Any CPD points listed are provided as a guide and registrants should satisfy themselves about the nature and quantity of CPD points they can claim for the activity. Please refer to Practice Guideline no.4 HERE for details.
