Prof Martin Dorahy on Traumatic dissociation and treatment

Prof Martin Dorahy on Traumatic dissociation and treatment

hero
Traumatic dissociation refers to the manifestation of dissociation, either in structural form or as psychosomatic phenomena, associated with overwhelming experiences. Such dissociation typically has a major impact on the way an individual comes to experience their sense of self. For example, the lack of agency characterising the traumatic experience is manifest in an ongoing manner via dissociative symptoms like depersonalisation, derealisation and amnesia, where the person feels a lack of control over their internal experience. Additionally, a sense of ownership over what has occurred externally and is occurring internally is significantly disrupted by dissociation. Traumatic dissociation is a major diagnostic feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and several of the dissociative disorders. It is central to complex PTSD and borderline personality disorder, and is often present in eating, psychotic and anxiety disorders, among others. The treatment of traumatic disorders required an overarching conceptualisation and as well as moment-to-moment assessment. Both will be explored in this presentation after a rendering of traumatic dissociation is provided.
