Exhibition Opening - An evening with Jessie Turner

About
Join us during NAIDOC week for our Exhibition opening & Artist Talk, ' How animals see death' by Jessie Turner.'How animals see death' examines death-related behaviours and species-specific rituals in animals, challenging the long-held assumption that non-human species lack an understanding of death. This belief has long been used to position humans as uniquely intelligent or spiritually superior reinforcing the notion that consciousness is a distinctly human trait. Drawing on anecdotal observation, scientific research, and speculative thinking, this series seeks to unsettle this narrative and expand how we perceive animal consciousness and responses to death.
Using still-life photography, a medium historically linked to death through its stillness and spectral quality, the work brings to light the emotional, cognitive, and even spiritual dimensions of how animals experience death.
Jessie Turner is a Nari Nari and Wotjobaluk artist living and making work on Wurundjeri land.
