The Gippslander - Sunday 24th August 2025

Departing Newport, Southern Cross, Flinders Street, Caulfield, Dandenong or Pakenham Stations, the train will steam from the heart of Melbourne through to the rapidly expanding southeastern suburbs. Reminiscent of the glory days of 'The Gippslander' an express run will be had towards the Latrobe Valley.
Club Car 'Moorabool', once a regular feature on The Gippslander, is planned to be on the train, so you can spend some time away from your compartment, soaking up the atmosphere as the world rolls by.
After flying beyond the overhead and leaving the suburbs behind, our train will enter the lush farming country of West Gippsland. Relax onboard as the locomotive works hard to tackle the steep grades of Longwarry Bank before we continue through the valley and onto the mysterious Haunted Hills. After passing through Morwell, Traralgon and Sale we will enter East Gippsland, opening up views towards Victorian high country and beginning the final stretch of our journey. After travelling over the new Avon River Bridge and through forests and farms, we arrive into the city of Bairnsdale at 12:46pm, 275 kilometres from Melbourne.
Explore Bairnsdale and find lunch at your leisure while we prepare the train for the return journey, hauled by our diesel locomotive to Traralgon before A2 986 will join us, which will be ready and waiting in Bairnsdale. It is encouraged to book ahead for lunch in Bairnsdale.
Departing Bairnsdale at 3:55pm, we will make a spirited run home to Melbourne, after a brief stop in Traralgon to reattach our steam locomotive, our train will depart towards the sunset and steam into the lights of the city. A history making day of rail travel culminates in the echoes of the engine's whistle over the Flinders Street Viaduct, marking the end of our journey.
