About Young Engineers Club

Young Engineers Club is an after-school engineering program that uses LEGO as a structured learning tool. It is not a free-build LEGO club.

Each week, students build a different motorised model inspired by real-world machines, such as cranes, cars, construction lifts, conveyor belts, amusement rides and more.

As they build, students learn practical engineering concepts including gears, belt transmission, motors, speed, force and movement, while developing problem-solving, critical-thinking and STEM skills.

Students are encouraged to build, experiment, troubleshoot and understand how and why their models work.

Years 1–3

Younger students focus on building strong engineering foundations. Challenges help them:

  • Follow instructions and build independently

  • Understand basic gears, motors and mechanisms

  • Explore cause and effect

  • Develop spatial awareness and construction skills

  • Build confidence and problem-solving skills

The focus is on learning the basics, experimenting and developing confidence through hands-on building.

Years 4–6

Older students take on more advanced engineering challenges, with greater focus on:

  • More complex gears, belts and mechanisms

  • Speed, force and movement

  • Troubleshooting and modifying designs

  • Mathematical and logical thinking

  • Independent problem-solving

  • Introductory coding and technology concepts where appropriate

The focus is on understanding why mechanisms work, experimenting with designs and applying engineering principles to solve problems.

What Students Learn

Engineering • Problem-Solving • Critical Thinking • Mathematics • Technology • Creativity • Persistence

Every session is a combination of learn, build, experiment and problem-solve — giving students the opportunity to develop STEM skills while having fun creating something that actually moves!

Suitable for students in Years 1–6.

Please note: Young Engineers is a structured engineering program, not a free-build LEGO club. Students participate in the weekly engineering challenges and follow educator instructions.
