Discover the timeless beauty and intricate craftsmanship of Peranakan culture by Learning the Art of Manek hosted by PAA (Melb). Immerse yourself in this traditional beading art, historically crafted by the Nyonyas, to create stunning shoes, coverings, bags, and decorative pieces. As we witness the evolution of our Peranakan heritage, it’s essential to preserve and celebrate these artistic traditions.

Join us for an exclusive opportunity to Learn the Art of Manek, facilitated by Ju Nah (Juna) Tan. The workshop is designed for beginners and will run over two learning sessions. Participants will receive a starter Manek Kit, which provides all the necessary materials for both sessions. The kit includes beading needles (sizes 10 & 12), Rasant 1000m quilting poly core thread, 8 x 20g packs of beads, 30cm embroidery hoop, cotton fabric, a container for beads, a pair of craft scissors, an A4 envelope, and a pattern template.

To ensure continued support and guidance, we have set up a private group forum for all students to ask questions and receive guidance after the workshop. You will be added to the group after your first session.

• Introduction to Manek embroidery as a Peranakan artistry
• Overview of Manek embroidery paraphernalia: Beads, thread, needles and more!
• Setting up the embroidery hoop and pattern template 
• Learning the stitching technique
• Stitching borders
• Manek tips on how to set up at home

Part 2 - 24th August 2025, 1:30-5:00pm

• Manek show and tell
• Practising the stitching technique
• Stitching the middle area
• Developing creations using Manek
• Troubleshooting
• Manek resources and support

Each session includes a half-hour afternoon tea break, where we will join other PAA (Melb) members in the hall. We will provide tea, coffee, and light snacks, but feel free to bring your favourite treats to share!

About Our Facilitator

Ju Nah (Juna) Tan, a.k.a. Manek Addict, is a 5th generation Penang Nyonya whose family has ties to Phuket and Medan. Juna started embroidering cross stitches during her primary school years, moved on to Western-style embroidery in high school, and finally picked up Peranakan Manek embroidery after university. She practices Peranakan (both paper and canvas) grid-based and single-needle freeform Manek embroidery and Japanese double-needle freeform embroidery. Juna is passionate about sharing the intricate art of Peranakan Manek embroidery with others as part of her heritage and passing this craft on to the next generation.
