Superb acting by silent screen idol, Richard Barthelmess, enhances this story already filled with beauty, humour, sadness and tragedy. His expressions and mannerisms convey first the adolescent boy and then the mature man he is suddenly forced to become when his charmed family is struck by a number of tragic blows.
Tranquil pastoral settings and scenes of old-fashioned family and village life evoke a sentimental world long lost in time, but one not without dangers.
