Performing on period instruments, Concertmaster Anna McMichael (Violin) is joined by Jennifer Kirsner (violin), Meg Cohen (viola), and Josephine Vains (cello).The Ensemble will present two masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire:
• Franz Schubert – String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D 810 “Death and the Maiden”
• Ludwig van Beethoven – String Quartet Op.18, No.1
Schubert’s famed quartet, written in 1824 while he was in the throes of severe illness and acutely aware of his mortality, trawls the depths of despair with unparalleled vibrancy and urgency. Experiencing this momentous work performed on gut strings will reveal the vivid colours and expressive sensitivities Schubert intended, bringing his vision to new life.
Coupled with the wonderfully rich palette of Beethoven’s Op.18, No.1—whose second movement is said to depict the vault scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet—this program promises an afternoon of profound drama, intimacy, and inspiration.
