Gambling among secondary school students
Join us for a deep dive into what the latest Australian secondary school alcohol and drug (ASSAD) survey tells us about gambling among secondary students in Victoria and NSW.
Every three years, up to 30,000 secondary school students aged 12 to 17 take part in the ASSAD survey which helps governments and other organisations understand specific trends in this demographic. Part of the 2022-23 study examined gambling participation and risk among a sample of students from schools in Victoria and NSW.
Dr Natasha Noble from the University of Newcastle will take us through the key findings from the report and what the study can tell us about gambling behaviours and trends among kids over time.
Key findings from the survey include:
• almost 1 in 3 students in Victoria had ever gambled
• 9% of students bet on sport in the last year
• the rate of risky gambling among these students was high
