Specialisation, psychiatric treatment for inpatient MH units
About
The current model of care for area mental health based acute inpatient units in Victoria was initially conceived as part of the deinstitutionalisation process that took place in the 1990’s. The model of care that emerged at that time to support the 25 bedded adult acute unit with a fixed catchment area has largely remained unchanged since that time. While there has been some addition of specialist beds for certain disorders or population, there has not been any further development in specialisation in acute psychiatry units. The rest of medicine continues to further specialise with focus on specific disorders leading to substantial improvement in health outcomes.
The recent addition of 260 new acute public mental health beds in Victoria creates an ideal opportunity to review how we provide inpatient care in public mental health services. It allows us to challenge ourselves to consider how we can best use this valuable resource in an evidenced based manner that focus on better outcomes for consumers and a more engaged and satisficed workforce.
Join us for this important one day forum where we bring together experts from across Australia and Internationally to challenge current thinking, generate discussion and help us imagine new ways for providing care.
