
SOCIAL MEDIA ALGORITHMS

We are delighted to present the next seminar in our Mentone Stories series that is designed for and by our parents, covering a range of topics to help families support our young people to navigate and thrive in today's world.
In acknowledging the importance of National R U OK? Day on Thursday 11 September, and the impact of social media on mental health, we are pleased to welcome Scott Griffiths to Mentone Stories.
Scott is an Associate Professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at The University of Melbourne.
Scott's research team has spent the past 3 years investigating social media algorithms with a special emphasis on TikTok and eating disorders. He has subsequently collaborated iwth federal legisltors in Australia an dSingapore and with the developers of TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, on ways to better protect social media users.
Scott is committed to helping parents, teachers and students understand how algorithms work, how they can sometimes lead us astray, and how to guard against some of their unintended consequences.

- Delivery: Face-to-face only, Mentone Grammar Thorold Theatre (Creativity Centre, enter via Lucerne Street)
- Open to: Mentone Stories seminars are free and open to MG parents, staff, and the wider community. We strongly encourage parents to bring their secondary school children to this event so that we can learn together to be safer online.
