Visible Mending Basics & Sashiko Stitching

This workshop is perfect for beginners, or those who want to rediscover and build on lost skills to personalise their clothes in creative ways. Not only will participants gain practical sewing techniques, but they’ll be inspired to find joy in transforming worn items and embrace a more sustainable approach to fashion!
Unlike today’s culture of fast fashion and single-use mentality, fabric was scarce in pre-industrial Japan. Garments were carefully mended for a longer life using patches, scraps, and simple stitches. A single piece of clothing could be repaired many times over generations, developing a rich and storied history. Today, the traditional art of sashiko has found new life in the era of slow fashion and visible mending.
Presented by the City of Perth Waste Education team, this 3-hour workshop will be led by Hoop Hoop Hooray AU
