ADFAS Brisbane HID-The Parthenon and Two Hellenistic Cities

This interest day will explore The Parthenon and Two Hellenistic Cities: Alexandria and Pergamon
The Parthenon: A Jewel for the Ages The lecture focuses on the most iconic Greek temple, the Parthenon. No expense was spared at a time when Athens was undergoing an extraordinary cultural revolution: this was the age of Socrates. The buildings on the Acropolis were constructed in a few short decades as a symbol and celebration of Athens’ democracy. The building programme was controversial - and sharply divided Athenian democratic opinion in its own day. Why was this temple the greatest the ancient world ever knew?
Two Hellenistic Cities
This lecture look at Greek art and architecture in the Hellenistic age and the emergence of Alexandria and Pergamon as centres of extraordinary culture and learning. What is the intellectual and artistic legacy of these cities?
Guests of members and visitors are welcome.
A short break with refreshments will be provided between the two lectures.
