Concert 5 2025: The Wild and the Wonderful

About
The major work is Symphonie Fantastique in 5 movements. It is significant as a pioneering work of program music, a symphony with a narrative, and for its innovative use of the idée fixe technique, where a recurring musical theme represents a specific idea or character (in this case, the artist's beloved). It's a deeply personal and autobiographical work, exploring themes of obsession, hallucination, and the macabre through the lens of Berlioz's own unrequited love.Percy Grainger's "Kipling's Jungle Book Cycle" is, even in Chalon Ragsdale’s wind-band version, is not a “suite” in the typical sense — it’s more like an unfolding, immersive emotional landscape drawn from Kipling’s poems. The ten movements in Ragsdale’s arrangement trace a range of human (and animal) feelings: awe, danger, tenderness, ferocity, nostalgia, and alienation.
Stephen Coutts will join us again to sing two songs.
