unmothered Development: VIP

About
unmothered is a new musical theatre work by composer Amelia Rooney, developed with writers Eliza Barnes and Grace Akimana. This project examines the deep-rooted patterns of trauma, silence, and neglect that travel through generations of women, especially within maternal roles. Using a feminist and queer-informed perspective, unmothered questions why mothers are so often ignored or dismissed, and how these wounds continue to shape the identities of daughters and granddaughters.Structured in three acts, the musical traces the lives of three interlinked women, a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter, exploring how each generation carries forward or challenges what came before. As the daughter grows, she uncovers the weight of
expectations and the hidden cost of unspoken needs, forcing her to decide whether to repeat old patterns or break free.
