2025 Margaret Henry Memorial Lecture with Cathy McGowan AO

About
The Margaret Henry Memorial Association (MHMA) is delighted to announce their 2025 lecture will be delivered by Cathy McGowan AO, known in Australian politics as Godmother of the Independents. When McGowan defeated Sophie Mirabella in 2013, she ended the Liberal/National Coalition’s 74-year stronghold on the Federal seat of Indi. A sixth-generation farmer and one of 13 children, McGowan became the first female independent to sit on the parliamentary crossbench. At the time, she was one of only two independents in the House of Representatives.
McGowan will share the story behind the grassroots campaign which started around kitchen tables and went on to radically alter our political terrain – forging a path for other communities looking to create meaningful change through an independent voice.
To mark ten years since her mother’s passing, Catherine Henry will open the Lecture with a few words in her honour. After the lecture, Felicity Biggins will lead a Q&A.
