This seminar is for students aged 13 and above of all levels and experience. Please note there are two ticket prices for AFTK members and non-members. You do not need to be an individual member, if your dojo is an AFTK member that means you get the member price. The AFTK aims to make events affordable and accessible.

This seminar will be held face-to-face only. All events, including instructor development sessions, are open regardless of affiliation or membership. 

Early Bird (until 24 Oct): Members $40 or $20 per session | Non-Members $55 or $30 per session
Standard (from 25 Oct): Members $50 or $25 per session | Non-Members $70 or $35 per session

Please note the pre-seminar bonus session for instructors is included for free if you are attending at least one session, otherwise, the single session fee applies.

Participants should bring their own weapons for Kobudo where possible. There will be a limited supply of communal weapons.

Bonus Instructor Session (8:30am–9:15am)
Dojo Marketing: Establishing a brand that sets you apart
Reece Cummings • Zen Creative Solutions
Reece has 17 years of marketing experience, including in senior management and academia, and operates a large traditional dojo. His session will share practical strategies for building a strong dojo brand and attracting and retaining students.

Session 1 – Kobudo (9:30am–11:00am)
Bojutsu Applied Fighting Drills
Clive Wadham • Ryukyu Kobudo Shimbukan Waikato
Clive has decades of experience teaching traditional karate and kobudo. In this session, he will explore bojutsu applied fighting drills that develop timing, distance, and control, showing how weapons practice enhances overall understanding of martial arts.

Session 2 – Karate (11:00am–12:30pm)
Kata Oyo Bunkai and Locks
Penny Cheketri  • Cheketri Karate Dentokan
Penny has over 40 years of training in karate and related arts, and has represented New Zealand internationally with success at world and national level. Her session will dive into the hidden layers of kata, demonstrating applications (oyo bunkai) from various kata with a particular focus on locks.

Session 3 – Karate (1:00pm–2:30pm)
Close Range Striking and Trapping
Derek English • Jikishinkan NZ
Derek is a Goju-Ryu karate instructor known for his teaching at seminars, where he shares practical approaches to training and application. His session will cover close-range striking and trapping drills that sharpen timing, create openings, and improve flow in application.
