The Seraphim Trio is delighted to bring two classical masterpieces to Langley Estate, an environment in which these sparkling early trios of Mozart and Beethoven were designed to be performed.The piano trio owes so much to the these two pioneers for the birth of this genre, and cellists to Mozart for emancipating their instrument from the left hand of the piano to create the three independent voices of the piano trio that we know and love.
The Mozart Piano Trio in E major was written in the summer of 1788- a period of some of his greatest music, and this trio is full of joyful melodic and harmonic invention, sometimes melancholy, often witty, but always sparkling and beautiful.
Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op. 1, No. 1 written just five years later, takes the baton from Mozart with his first published works- his opus 1 piano trios. He incorporates the wit and charm of Haydn, the lyricism of Mozart, and raises the stakes by adding a fourth movement- a joyful and sparkling scherzo.
