BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS
BY NEIL SIMON
DIRECTED BY LYN LEE.
Brighton Beach Memoirs is a semi-autobiographical play by Neil Simon, set in 1937 in the Brighton Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. It follows Eugene Morris Jerome, a witty and observant teenage boy, as he navigates adolescence, dreams of becoming a writer, and copes with his eccentric Jewish family's struggles during the Great Depression.
The play centers on Eugene's coming-of-age experiences—dealing with puberty, sibling rivalry, and his first crush—while also exploring the challenges faced by his extended family, including financial hardship and the looming threat of war in Europe. Blending humor with heartfelt emotion, the play paints a vivid portrait of family life, resilience, and growing up.
