Brighton Beach Memoirs is a semi-autobiographical play by Neil Simon, set in 1937 in the Brighton Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. It follows Eugene Morris Jerome, a witty and observant teenage boy, as he navigates adolescence, dreams of becoming a writer, and copes with his eccentric Jewish family's struggles during the Great Depression.
The play centers on Eugene's coming-of-age experiences—dealing with puberty, sibling rivalry, and his first crush—while also exploring the challenges faced by his extended family, including financial hardship and the looming threat of war in Europe.
