ArtsNational Perth - The journey of enamelled & gilded glass
From Cairo to Venice to Paris: the journey of enamelled and gilded glass is a fascinating story. The technical skills of Syrian and Egyptian glassmakers in producing highly accomplished works decorated with enamels and gold in the 13th-14th centuries prompted a transfer of technology to the developing Venetian glass industry, which had its crowning achievements in the 15th-16th centuries. In the 19th century the original Islamic works became sought after collectibles on the French art market.
