ArtsNational Perth - The journey of enamelled & gilded glass
From Cairo to Venice to Paris: the journey of enamelled and gilded glass is a fascinating story. In this lecture, Dr Stefano Carboni discusses how the technical skills of Syrian and Egyptian glassmakers in producing highly accomplished works decorated with enamels and gold in the 13th-14th centuries prompted a transfer of technology to the developing Venetian glass industry, which had its crowning achievements in the 15th-16th centuries. In the 19th century the original Islamic works became sought after collectibles on the French art market.
