‘For my teacher Freidl’ LJLA event with musician Rita Satch
About
Join us for an intimate musical and reflection event with acclaimed Australian musician Rita Satch.
Frederika “Friedl” Dicker-Brandeis (1898–1944) was an Austrian artist, designer, and educator who studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar. Deported to Terezín in 1942 with her husband, Pavel, she secretly taught art to the camp’s children, using creativity as a way to help them express and process their emotions. She insisted each child sign their own work, preserving their individuality in dehumanizing conditions. Before being deported to Auschwitz in 1944, she entrusted two suitcases containing over 4,500 children’s drawings to Raja Engländerova, chief tutor of Girls' Home L 410. Friedl was murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau; her husband survived and so do the children’s paintings.
At this special preview, Rita Satch will share the inspiration behind her composition for 'A Path To the Light Concert' —particularly her connection to Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, who used art to bring hope to children. Rita will discuss her creative process, perform her piece, and sing some of her original songs.
