RECORDED LECTURE - THE STORY OF STEIFF & THE TEDDY BEAR

Whenever a fabulous looking teddy bear pops up on television programs like the Antiques Roadshow the expert appraiser always gets very excited if they can confirm it is made Steiff. If this proves to be case, then the bear usually attracts a hefty valuation even when it shows signs with play wear. Steiff is a German-based plush toy company started in 1880. It claims to have made the world's first factory-made teddy bear. Margarete Steiff, a seamstress began making fabric elephants that were sold in her shop as pincushions. However, children of the day began playing with them, and in the years following she went on to design many other animal-themed toys for children, such as monkeys, donkeys, horses, camels, pigs, mice, dogs, cats, rabbits, and giraffes. Today these early toys are keenly sought after by collectors. THE LINK TO THE RRECORDED LECTURE WILL BE SENT ON WEDNESDAY 5 NOVEMBER 2025.
