The Self-Respect Movement, founded by Thanthai Periyar in 1925, marked a revolutionary chapter in the fight against caste hierarchy, gender inequality, and religious domination in India. Emerging from Tamil Nadu, it sought to liberate individuals from oppressive social structures and instill rationalism, equality, and human dignity. The movement questioned the legitimacy of birth-based privilege and promoted the idea that respect must stem from one’s actions and character, not from caste or religion. It also inspired reforms in women’s rights, language pride, and the pursuit of social justice—values that continue to influence progressive politics and humanist thought across the world today.
To commemorate 100 years of this transformative movement, the Periyar Ambedkar Thought Circle Australia (PATCA) is organizing a grand celebration titled “Self Respect 100” on 7th November 2025 at 6:00 PM at Parramatta Town Hall
