Course at a Glance

Run in conjunction with the Monash Health Physiotherapy Critical Care & Surgical Services stream, this interactive simulation course is designed to equip physiotherapists with a structured approach to the assessment and management of ventilated and tracheostomised patients. These courses have a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary care, and aim to consolidate and refine skills in communication and collaborative practice while providing the opportunity to implement skills such as ventilator hyperinflations, cuff deflation and early mobilisation

Course Topics

Sessions incorporate the use of high-fidelity clinical simulation scenarios followed by facilitated discussions to assist physiotherapists in improving confidence and competence in the assessment and management of:

• Mechanically ventilated patients within the intensive care unit
• Tracheostomised patients across a range of care settings
• Acutely deteriorating patient requiring escalation of care

Course Dates 2026:

Monday 30th - Tuesday 31st March 2026

Monday 12th - Tuesday 13th October 2026

Course Timings: Two full days (8:00am-16:30pm)

Course Fees : $1250.00 ( This includes pre-reading, catering for both days morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, participation in a minimum of 3 simulated scenarios and contribution to a total of 8 debrief sessions.

Who can attend?

This course is suitable for Physiotherapists who work in high acuity or intensive care units, as well as those who provide care to patients with a tracheostomy. These courses are well-suited to staff looking to advance their clinical skills in the management of these patient populations, and may also serve as a refresher to those returning to the critical care environment.
