Depending on how your child is feeling you can drop them off and come back one hour later for the show. Or you can park, walk in and hang out in our mingling area while your child gets into costume and completes their rehearsal. A drop off zone will be set up near the post box and there is plenty of street parking on Fernberg Road.
Does my child have to attend?
We encourage all students to attend. The concert plays an important role within our curriculum – it allows students to put their skills to the test in front of an audience. Speak Up programs combine joy of regular classes with the magic of performing on stage. We don’t believe you should do one (classes) without the other (performances). It’s a bit like training for a sport but never playing any games!
What will my child learn in term four classes?
Speak Up’s 12th Annual Concert is an celebration of Literary Nonsense. With poetry, music and storytelling, our young performers will expand their stage craft skills in what is sure to be a magical event! For students who can't make it to the concert, your teacher will organise somethings special for them to perform at the end of the term and they will still benefit from learning about on-stage performance skills!
How do I sign my child up to take part?
There is no need to register or sign up. Your child will be included if they are enrolled with us. If your child is unable to come along, please let us know immediately.
What should my child wear on the day?
Speak Up students should wear their speak up shirt & black leggings
Drama club students should wear drama blacks (black shirt & black leggings)
Hair should be neat and tidy. Costumes will be provided for students on the day.
What will my child receive on the day?
Each student who participates in the Annual Concert will receive a button badge to add to their collection. Spirit Awards are given out to celebrate students who exemplify what it means to be a Speak Up Kid.
What are the sign-in and supervision procedures?
Students will arrive with their parents on concert day. Students will sit at the front with their teachers whilst parents sit in the audience.
What is accessiblity like at the Paddington Studio?
Not great. The venue is on the first floor and is not accessible for wheelchair users. We are able to relocate certain performances downstairs, so please contact us regarding your accessibility needs and we'll see what we can do to help. We're working on applying for funding to put in a lift!
Does my child need to memorise something?
Yes, please! Have a look in your child’s folder for a copy of their concert script. We ensure children are given plenty of time to learn lines in class, and teachers will be standing by to prompt on the day!
Our Commitment To Positive Performing Experiences
As always at Speak Up Studio, our focus is on building confidence. We find that one of the best ways to do this is to give children the opportunity to have positive performing experiences. This includes being well prepared before the day and ensuring that our backstage area is well managed so that the day is fun and enjoyable. Speak Up Studio takes the following steps to ensure that our Annual Concert is a positive, and confidence-building experience for each of our students:
- Selecting material for each class that is of an appropriate level of difficulty
- Scheduling enough rehearsal time for classes to learn and practise the script
- Providing positive feedback to students throughout the rehearsal process
- Regularly reviewing the progress that classes have made, and making appropriate changes if it seems that the script is too long, or too difficult
- Providing each student with a costume that they are comfortable performing in
- Ensuring there are enough leaders backstage to supervise and assist
- Putting strategies in place to ensure that students are kept safe
- Making every effort to ensure students are not waiting for longer than necessary on concert and dress rehearsal day, and
- Congratulating students after the concert and helping them to feel proud of their hard work
