Lyrical Currents: Music for Winds and Piano
About
Join Sirius Chamber Ensemble for an afternoon of music for winds and piano, featuring classics by Beethoven and Poulenc alongside Australian masterpieces rarely heard before.Beethoven modelled his Quintet for piano and winds on Mozart's earlier composition for the same ensemble. Created as a homage, this work transcends the original, with some of the most glorious melodies and textures of the 18th century.
Poulenc's Sextet for piano and winds is dazzling and witty but packs an emotional weight. Each instrument has a moments of virtuosity alongside moments of serenity and beauty.
We continue to explore the music of Margaret Sutherland and her friend Meta Overman ahead of our upcoming second album of their music. The music of these Australian women composers of the 20th century was sadly underperformed, despite being full of colour, mood, humour and creativity. Their works take pride of place in this program alongside the classics.
