Agenda: The Cost of Looking Fine: Burnout, Shame, and Professional Identity in Helping ProfessionsPresented by Meg Clarey
This presentation explores burnout through the lenses of professional identity, self-determination theory, and moral injury, considering how ongoing barriers to acting in alignment with one’s values may contribute to professional exhaustion and diminished wellbeing. Drawing on clinical practice, supervision, coaching and contemporary research, the discussion will examine why some burnout experiences become particularly difficult to recover from, why support does not always land as intended, and what this may mean for helping professionals working within increasingly complex systems
Meg Clarey is a Registered Counsellor, ACA-registered Supervisor, coach and doctoral researcher whose work focuses on burnout, wellbeing, and sustainable practice within helping professions. Alongside private practice and supervision work, Meg currently supports business owners across North Queensland. Her work sits at the intersection of professional wellbeing, identity, and complex systems.
