ACA Brazilian Chapter Meeting - March 2026
About
The Australian Counselling Association (ACA) offers a Chapter meeting for its Brazilian and Portuguese community and members. The Brazilian Chapter meet online via Zoom, on the first Friday of each month.Agenda - Becoming Dementia-Aware: A Neuropsychological Framework for Counselling Practice.
Presented by: Aline Castro (English)
This presentation explores how knowledge about the brain can support counselling practice when working with people living with dementia and their families. Drawing on current dementia research and clinical experience, the session describes how changes in the brain can affect thinking, emotions, behaviour, communication, and relationships.
The presentation introduces a counselling framework that connects understanding of brain changes with practical, person-centred therapeutic approaches. It highlights how greater awareness of dementia can help counsellors better understand clients’ experiences and respond in supportive and meaningful ways.
Drawing on clinical counselling practice, the session describes dementia-informed approaches used in therapeutic settings. It considers how behaviours related to dementia may be understood through changes in brain function, helping to reduce misunderstanding and support respectful therapeutic engagement with people living with dementia and their families and carers. Examples from clinical work will illustrate how scientific knowledge can be translated into everyday counselling practice, including communication approaches, emotional validation, and collaborative goal-setting within a person-centred framework.
Aline Castro is a registered counsellor and Level 4 member of the Australian Counselling Association with over 20 years of experience supporting individuals and families experiencing grief, loss, ageing, dementia, and palliative care. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Psychology and is currently completing a Master’s degree in Dementia at the University of Tasmania.
