This year's Risk and Practice Management Conference will focus on the new incoming AML-CTF legislation and what this means for law firms in Tasmania.

9.25am - Welcome 

9.30am - 10am  Session 1 - PII Insurance Update 

10am - 10.45am  Session 2 - AML Kick-Start

  • This session commences with a high-level orientation to the full AML framework, distilling the core elements of Tranche 2, and key roles and obligations within your firm.
  • The focus will be on highlighting what matters most for legal practices, clarifying common misunderstandings and identifying the practical implications firms need to prioritise in their first six months.
  • Designed as a quasi-interactive session - it will assume delegates have already skimmed the AUSTRAC’s starter packs which are available in January 2026 - with Q&A opportunities provided so that participants can raise issues and seek clarification on the points that relate most to them.

10.45am Morning Tea

11am - 12pm  Session 3 - Navigating Legal Professional Privilege, Confidentiality and Suspicious Matter Reporting   

  • This session will cover Suspicious Matter Reporting (SMR), focusing on the procedural requirements and any practitioner concerns, including wellbeing and safety implications of reporting clients linked to serious criminal conduct.  It will also address legal professional privilege in the context of the AML scheme, including the distinction between privilege and confidentiality and the practical steps required to apply the privilege exemption.   
  • Additional ethical issues arising from Tranche 2 implementation, including conflicts, disengagement and safe practice considerations, will also be explored.

12pm - 1pm  Session 4 - Preparing your Practice

  • This session will outline the practical steps firms can take to become AML-ready, starting with the essentials for practices operating without dedicated technology.
  • This session is designed to give firms a clear understanding of pathways as well a key practical obligations so they can make informed, pragmatic decisions about their AML implementation model.One or two real case scenarios will be worked through to illustrate the full life cycle of a new matter, demonstrating how a firm would approach AML obligations from beginning to end.
  • A short discussion will follow on how technology can support efficiency and alleviate common pain points, noting that full vendor demonstrations will be available for interested delegates after the conference lunch.
